2009 - Neudorf Moutere Riesling

  • * Style: Med-Sweet
  • * Type: Table
  • * Region: New Zealand

“Earthy, chalky musky notes over lemon peel and lime leaf aromas, Effortlessly invigoratingly sweet with a great line of acid running through the middle contributing to a superb balance and lingering through the long steely finish. 91 points”

– Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate.

Two hectares of Riesling vines run down the gravelly clay slopes of their Upper Moutere vineyard in the Nelson region, and further plantings are planned. Their minute production of 400 cases of Neudorf Moutere Riesling is keenly sought after, and along with Neudorf Moutere Chardonnay and Neudorf Moutere Pinot Noir is accorded “Classic” status in Michael Coopers authoritative annual “Buyers Guide to New Zealand Wines.”

Stylistically looking for purity and elegance, Neudorf has an international reputation for wines of quality and authenticity.

Winemaker John Kavanagh and viticulturalist Richard Flatman are keenly involved in the creation of Neudorf Moutere Riesling, a wine of around 9% alcohol. The current vintage 2009 is a deeply complex wine with grapefruit, local oranges, tangelos and a lick of orange blossom and ripe guavas. The grape sugars are kept in balance with lively acidity and natural minerality. Part of the terroir expression of Neudorf’s Moutere vineyards is this subtle and persistent mineral note, running through all varieties. The roots of these old vines burrow down two and three metres, past the shallow top soil and into the ancient gravel threaded clays beneath.

“This is intensely fresh and lemon-limey on the nose with an underlying kerosene nose, very reminiscent of good Mosel Riesling Kabinett, not least in its mouthwatering, featherweight, off-dry lime-like fruit, whose keroseney notes will develop further flavour with age. 91/100″
